In todays world now is a good time to grow a vegetable garden with inflation eating away at your paycheck. And the possible collapse of the financial system under the weight of the mortgage meltdown. It is time to take some control over your own food security and the best and easiest way to do that is to grow a simple vegetable garden.

Building a vegetable garden is not all that difficult. If your lawn will grow grass it will grow vegetables. You dont need to know the soils ph or anything else for that matter. If your backyard is underwater because of poor drainage, or some other matter you should look at raised beds. But other than that it will grow vegetables.

I dont like planting the same vegetable seed one after another, as that way pests and diseases cant travel easily from one plant to the next. After you have planted the seeds water the whole garden bed. Now is the waiting and watering game Water every second day if the garden needs it. In about two weeks things should be happening, so make out another meter or two and plant some more and that is how you build a vegetable garden the easy way.
When building a vegetable garden you can do it the easy way or the other way. Ill stick to the easy way as that is the way I know. First up go to the supermarket and check out the price of vegetables because that is the money you will be saving in a little over a month.

Start planting your seeds in the early spring time and hopefully after the last frost has passed, but it doesnt matter if it hasnt. Just pick a spot where you want to start the vegetable garden and mow the grass as short as possible. This is to make it easier to plant the seeds but also the vegetable plants should be able to grow above the grass in a very short time.

Now mark out the start of the vegetable garden bed. We are only going to plant one end of the garden so pick a spot where the vegetable garden can grow across your lawn. This is your first vegetable garden.

Now it is planting time. Forget the digging that is too difficult, just start planting. This way you get a variety of vegetables all growing on one place. You can plant more of the vegetables you really like. Now water the whole area and wait. Every weekend you could plant another meter or two and keep watering and adding seeds where they dont come up. After about 2 weeks to a month depending on the weather and how warm it is things should start to happen and there will be fresh homegrown vegetables on your kitchen table.

There are too many foods labeled as "constipating" by different conflicting theories. This article discusses eight categories of examples, briefly:

1. Foods stripped of their dietary fiber. Examples: wheat and rice polished to sparkling whiteness. Fruits that are processed into meltingly sweet drinks. This theory is favored by the mainstream medical community.

2. Foods containing dietary fiber eaten excessively. This is propounded by people who do not believe in the lack of dietary fiber as a cause of constipation. Human carnivores would love this theory.

3. Foods containing opioid peptides. Examples are wheat - again, and milk therefore dairy products. Cancer patients who need to rely on opioid pain killers experience constipation as a prominent side effect which is very difficult to relieve even by prescriptive laxatives and stool softeners.

4. Foods containing beta-carbolines. Cooking and processing food produces beta-carbolines. People who believe in this theory would think that cooked meat and vegetables can make them constipated. What is left for them to eat is raw fruits, meat and eggs.

5. Foods taken excessively at the wrong time. For example: taken in moderation, banana promotes bowel movements; taken excessively, banana is constipating. Some mothers who give more bananas than their babies could handle would know this. It is even said that women can become temporarily constipated when they eat bananas during late nights. Too much snacks and later super can confuse the biological clock to the extend it doesn't know when to "let go".

6. Beef. People who think opioid peptides and beta carbolines are constipating believe fresh raw beef relieves constipation. To a Chinese physician, this is accumulation of heat in the stomach and intestines, a possible consequence of boozing and greasy food. This heat impairs circulation of body fluid, drying up the intestines and resulting in constipation. Wine is said to aggravate the symptoms.

8. Unusual Chinese theories : eel, dog and snake meat can worsen the constipation of a patient with too much accumulated heat as stated above. Other offensive foods are: garlic, onion, mustard, pomegranate, apricot, cherry and coconut.

There are many caveats to the above list of foods that are said to cause constipation. What is constipating to one person may not affect another person. Individual health condition must be taken into consideration; while majority would agree on most of the foods mentioned here, a patient of celiac disease would them to be a cause of the opposite effect, diarrhea. By the way , these are definitely not suggestions for a person who is having diarrhea. Overall, a discussion of constipating foods helps to highlight the fact that eating right to suit personal needs is a science by itself.

Fortunately for those of us newly interested in eating organic and raw foods, there are lots of products out there. Natural and organic foods used to be found only in natural food stores, and those could be few and far between. While not as ubiquitous as McDonald's, there ARE many more stand-alone stores. And the grocery chains are catching on too, with more organic selections than ever before. If you don't see them in your grocery store, just ask. You're probably not the only person in your neighborhood who'd like to see more of these options.

Many grocery stores now feature sprouts and other living foods in the produce aisle. Of course, if they don't, there's nothing easier to grow for yourself than sprouts!

There are also tons of sites on the Web where you can order raw and living foods. Just do a search on raw foods and you'll come up with a lot of different places to order the foods you'd like to buy. Many of these sites are also full of useful information, to help you learn about eating raw foods, and help educate you on the specific food values.

What else? Experiment with what you like. Take the time to learn a little about what the different nutrients in foods do for you. A few examples:

Cabbage - High in Vitamin C; important for healthy cell function
Shitake mushrooms - contain essential fatty acids and antioxidants to support a healthy immune system

Raw Nourishment
You might agree on an intellectual level that eating raw foods is a good idea. But does the thought of abandoning a lifetime of eating habits for the sake of what seems like a good idea seem like more than you can do?

So don't! That's silly and the surest way to guarantee you won't even give a raw foods diet a fighting chance. "Everything in moderation" and we think that applies to even the healthiest notions. It's not healthy if you won't do it!

Don't think of trying a raw foods diet as taking anything AWAY. Try adding them in. We think if you add in things like raw vegetables, sprouts, fruits and juices, you won't be as hungry and when you're not hungry, you won't give into impulsive eating. If you want that steak, or even a McDonald's hamburger, plan for it and enjoy it. Once you start eating raw foods though, and notice how good you feel on them and how much more energy you have, that hamburger just won't look as good to you.

You do want to be sure though, that you're getting enough of the right kinds of nutrition. Eating raw foods doesn't mean eating only the raw foods you like. Watermelon is good for you, but it's not enough. The same with most foods. You'll need to do a little research into which raw foods have the essential proteins, or what combinations of food you need to eat to get enough protein. Raw food eating is intended to nourish your body in a completely different way, but just being raw isn't enough. You want to do this to be in balance, and you need to balance the raw foods you're eating for proper nutrition.

One way to ensure that you are getting enough nutrients is to incorporate a new vegetable every week. Buy something you have never heard of, like a "leek", or "swiss chard." You will find a whole new world of tastes and textures open up to you. You will feel more and more deterred by fast food. I guarantee it.

Ducks are the most pleasant animals in the bird family unless you upset them. They are considered to be very low-maintenance, but you still need to do your research. There are certain do's and don'ts to feeding ducks, particularly for those of you who live here in Florida.
They will eat a lot, so do not skimp. It is amazing to sit there and watch a duck eat. They will eat a variety of foods, including duck snacks. Their food is inexpensive to buy. Chicken feed works with ducks. You throw a few ounces of chicken feed on the ground and they will gobble it up. They love bird seed. In fact, you sprinkle a mixture of both in front of them, and they will be happy as can be.

Some say that cracked corn is good for ducks. Research shows that whole kennel corn is better. The oils on the outside of the kennel corn are healthier for them. What about bugs? Yes, they love bugs they make excellent duck snacks. The more bugs you bring them, the happier they are. You can bring them any bug you want and they will eat it. Ducks do not discriminate against bugs. They love everything from a night crawler to mealworms.

Do you know you are able to grow bugs? It is true, you can. There is a great book on it called "How to Raise Mealworms". The book tells you everything you need to know. It is cost-effective and the ducks will love them. Especially domestic ducks. Ducks love water. They use water for bathing and drinking. Ducks are known for telling you off when their water is not fresh, so you will need to freshen it up several times a day.

What Snacks Are Allowed?

Ducks are big eaters, so snacks should not take up more than 10% of their diet. The only snacks that are okay in an unlimited amount are things like kale, lettuce, weeds, grass, etc. Do you have a berry or fruit orchard in your backyard? Ducks will eat whatever you throw away. Watch them eat the berries. It is hilarious. Other snacks they can eat are whole grains, vegetables, and proteins. Try to give them healthy snacking options because they will gain weight. Ducks gain weight easily.

I'm a very busy person working 9 to 10 hour days, 5 or 6 days a week and I get to the gym for some vigorous physical activity about three times a week. I eat a healthy diet inclusive of everything the body needs, such as protein, carbohydrates and of course, vitamins. I consume heaps of green vegetables like broccoli and green beans. I eat a couple of bananas each day, and put red peppers, crushed ginger and garlic in almost every meal that I can.

I am a firm believer in getting as many nutrients as I can from natural resources, but often there are times where you just can't. We all have those days don't we? I am an extremely physical person, coming from a bodybuilding background. But more recently, my focus is on exercising to keep in trim shape and feeling young.

I know that carbohydrates give me energy and that I need essential amino acids (protein) for the repair process after that vigorous exercise, and above all I know the importance of consuming the correct amount of water each day to keep my body hydrated.

I am knowledgeable about healthy eating and the health benefits of fruit, vegetables, spices and herbs and about how bad saturated fat is for me. I eat whole grain foods, and generally like to eat fat free food. But I don't usually over stress about having a tuna and mayo sandwich, or the occasional cheese baguette for lunch sometimes, even though I know cheese is high in saturated fat (It's great for protein, right?!).

I know that I must eat a low sodium diet, to help prevent high blood pressure and stick to healthy fats from the likes of olive oil and fish oils. But, I also have no qualms about diving into the complete opposite when needs must. After all, we work really hard and take care of our loved ones, so why shouldn't we indulge ourselves in a pizza, curry or spaghetti Bolognese once in a while?

But Are We Thinking About Certain Aspects a Little Wrong?

We usually view working out and diet as a 'credit/debit system', just like we do with our bank account. You make a deposit when you hit the gym (burn off some saturated fat), so you can enjoy making the withdrawal (eat some junk food) of a Friday night out with friends, without going into 'debt'.

And even if you do, your Saturday afternoon aerobics workout or football match, and the early morning Sunday run will balance the books, right? Wrong! If thats what you have been thinking, you need to think again. Sorry, but keeping healthy, fit and feeling great does not work like that.

You are no different to me and the rest of the population of health conscious folk in the country! We watch what we eat throughout the week, then when Friday night comes, your healthy consciousness is out of the window! But after a while, something doesn't seem to add up with your calculations of 'I workout a few times a week, I eat a near healthy diet through the week - so I should be ok to 'pig out' on Friday nights and enjoy myself. Yup, that's what I thought too!

You see, last year my daughter was born and I took the option of being a stay at home dad for the first year so my partner could return to work. I work for myself, and I can earn what I need to to cover basic costs just by working part time, and I usually make more than that anyway. So working part time was a great option for me, so that I got the special bonding time with my daughter. But..

It suddenly dawned on me a few months ago, that I've gained a huge amount of weight since April 2009. I've tried several ways to lose the extra pounds but nothing has worked so far and now my front and side 'impact pads' are seriously bothering me, especially since I recently measured my bodyfat percentage!

So my thought process has been completely wrong with the 'credit/debit' diet and exercise system and those Friday nights out have taken their toll on my body. So the bottom line is that the calorie intake on a good night out with friends far out weighs the calories used and destroyed in a few good workouts.

And it's by a lot, enough for me to be concerned about my health. On a typical Friday night, it goes something like this. I drink around six pints at 225 calories = 1350 calories. I eat two bags on nuts = 400 calories. Then, when I get home I eat a deep pan pepperoni pizza = 1200 calories, with two glasses of red to go with it = 250. Total that up and you've got 3200 MASSIVE CALORIES!

And that is just your night out, not including your lunch and breakfast etc. But it's the amount of exercise you require to 'shake' off that (relatively) controlled indulgence that is going to rock your world, and not in a good way neither!

Your Sunday morning run needs to now be around 30km, and not just the measly run around the park. Or you need about 120 minutes on an Elliptical trainer, a thousand sit ups and an hour on the gyms stepper to burn that off. None of which is feasible for me, or (probably) for you. So you must focus on your continuity with your health needs, which includes not only getting enough exercise but eating healthy - period.

Just how big is the diabetes problem worldwide? I have heard of Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes, but what are diabetes mellitus type 2 symptoms and is it the same as Type 2 diabetes?

Over the past two decades, the number of people globally who suffer from diabetes shot up to 230 million worldwide - 30 million of them just in the U.S. Millions of lives have been lost and the ability of the health care system to deal with this disease is severely challenged while trying to manage this epidemic. This according to recent information provided by the International Diabetes Federation.

Diabetes is where your body can't store properly or use fuel for the energy the body needs. It's glucose - a form of sugar - that is the fuel that your body needs. It's from these foods that glucose comes from: bread, cereal, pastas, rice, potatoes, some vegetables and fruits. Your body needs insulin to properly utilize glucose. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by your pancreas.

Essentially, Diabetes is identified as three basic types: Type 1, Type 2, Gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes will occur only during pregnancy.

Types of Diabetes Mellitus: Diabetes mellitus is a clinical condition that has numerous causes. There are two classes of diabetes mellitus. They are idiopathic and secondary.

The idiopathic form of diabetes falls into two main types; insulin dependent and non-insulin-dependent. The insulin-dependent form of diabetes mellitus (Type 1) is identified also as IDDM. It's identified by the development of "diabetic ketoacidosis" (DKA) if not treated with a therapy of insulin. The Type 1 diabetes class is more likely developed childhood (why it is also called juvenile diabetes) and is caused by autoimmune destruction of b-cells found in the pancreas.

Insulin-Resistant (or non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus - Type 2 is identified also as NIDDM. It's characterized by a persistent condition of hyperglycemia. It rarely leads to ketoacidosis. Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed in adults age 40 and older. It was previously known as adult onset diabetes. The Type 2 form of diabetes can be the result of genetic defects that are known to cause both insulin resistance and deficiency. The two main forms of type 2 diabetes are:

Late onset common with obesity and late onset not related to obesity.

Example meal plan for managing diabetes (type 1 or type 2): Select foods that you like and satisfy hunger for you. Be sure to include "carbs" (carbohydrate foods) with each meal or snack as needed to manage blood sugar (glucose) levels. Eat the biggest meal at lunch or for dinner. You need to seek immediate medical attention if diabetic symptoms occur. From time to time, and particularly Type 1 suffers - these can occur abruptly. It could lead to 'diabetic keto acidosis' (DKA). This is a medical emergency. Symptoms of DKA include loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, unusually excessive urination, confusion and other altered states of consciousness all leading to diabetic coma. Please seek immediate medical attention if you see these symptoms occur.

The conclusion to take away from the question "?": Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and Type 2 Diabetes are virtually the same disease - with symptoms being the same. Really the only difference is in the semantics of the name.

Obesity around the world is at an all time high. Related to both the type of diet that is most commonly enjoyed as well as the decreased amount of exercise which people are getting more and more individuals are finding themselves experiencing a growing weight problem. And, related to the fast-paced world in which we live, people are also searching for a magic pill to make the process of weight loss simpler than weight gain.

The simple fact of the matter is, the more you eat the more weight you gain. Our bodies work on a specific scale all food. In other words if you eat less calories than you burn you lose weight and if you eat more calories than you burn you gain weight. However, there is also a point at which the body will go into starvation mode. Those numbers are generally 1200 calories for women in 1500 calories for men. So if a woman needs less than 1200 calories per day her body perceives that it is not getting enough energy each day in order to survive. Going into starvation mode means that the metabolism slows down and no matter how much she doesn't eat she won't lose that much weight.

In a desperation to lose weight fast are some people have turned to the use of laxatives. However, using laxatives in weight loss program is not healthy and it is not safe. This is because of the physiological mechanism through which laxatives work and through which food is absorbed.

When food enters the digestive tract it goes down the esophagus and enters into the stomach. Here gastric juices are mixed with the food in order to help break the molecules down into a form which can be absorbed in the intestinal tract. Food and calorie absorption happens in the small intestines which measures between 18 and 21 feet long in a normal adult.

Next the food enters a large intestines which is significantly shorter (three to 4 feet) and whose main job it is is to reabsorb the excess water and fluid which has enabled the body to keep the food moving easily through the intestines.

Laxatives are a chemical which your tastes the cells of the large intestines, encouraging the large intestines to empty earlier than the body is ready. After losing a large amount of fluid from an early bowel movement the body than compensates by retaining fluid. The initial feeling of dehydration helps the person to "feel" then but within hours the person "feels" bigger because of the amount of fluid being retained in the body.

The body uses this fluid to remove wastes and toxins so by retaining fluid the individual we'll actually feel bad because of the build up of waste products which are normally excreted through the kidneys. At this point many people continue to take more laxatives to get rid of the full feeling again. This sets up a vicious cycle of diarrhea, dehydration and poor waste removal.

Continued use of laxatives will actually lead to cramping, bloating, water retention and will increase the persons risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome and colon tumors.

If you believe you have a problem with laxatives you should consult your primary care physician and and learn specific methodologies of stopping the abuse using several different steps. Unless laxatives are prescribed by a doctor you should stop using them immediately but this is often easier said than done. Many individuals who have had a problem abusing laxatives for more than a week or two may require the help of a mental health professional.

Drink at least eight to 10 8 ounce glasses of water each day in order to help rehydrate the body. Believe it or not, the more you drink the less water you will retain nonetheless feeling of bloating you will have. Do not substitute water for caffeine drinks or alcohol or even juices. And include physical activity each and every day to encourage her body to have a regular bowel movements.

Individuals who have used laxatives over time will find that it's has significantly impacted the ability of their lower intestines to function appropriately. By eating regular meals three times a day and including lots of fruits and vegetables you will actually increase your success rate to stop using the laxatives as well as to lose weight.

Keep a record of your bowel movements each day so that they can be monitored. Remember that you have only this one body. Through long-term abuse using any chemical you will decrease the effective functioning of any part. Unfortunately, this also decreases your overall lifespan and your ability to enjoy a high quality life. Using laxatives in order to achieve a weight-loss goal is completely inappropriate. Do not misunderstand the difference between a colon cleansing, which is done one time every two or three months in order to jumpstart a weight-loss program or cleanse wastes and toxins from the body, with the long-term use of laxatives which do not achieve this goal.

You are able to stop this vicious cycle and on to a healthier and fitter you!

Water canning your home grown tomatoes & vegetables is a great way to continue to have fresh vegetables long after the growing season is over. In our grandparents time everyone knew how to water can the foods they grew, but over the years water canning has become a lost art to most of us. Fortunately growing our own foods, as well as learning how to can the foods we grow has started to make a come back. I have providing below the method I learned from my grandmother.
1. Fill your canning pot with water and put on the large burner on your stove on high. The water level should be high enough to completely cover the canning jars plus 2 inches once they are submerged.

2. Put a smaller pot on the stove and fill with water of the way full, and bring the water to a rolling boil. You will use this pot to sterilize your canning jars & lids as well as to blanch the tomatoes.

3. Carefully inspect your glass jars to make sure there are no chips or cracks. If you find any, discard them. Inspect your canning lids to make sure the seal is intact as well.

4. Once the small pot is boiling take your previously cleaned canning jars, rings & lids and place them one by one in the boiling water with a spoon for a few minutes each to sterilize, then remove them carefully and set aside to cool. Once you have done this, you are ready to blanch your tomatoes.

5. If you have sensitive skin, wear latex gloves to protect your hands from the acid during blanching. To blanch, first wash your tomatoes and gently place a whole tomato in simmering water with a spoon. Turn them in the water so all sides are exposed to the heat. After a few seconds, remove the tomatoes and place them in a bowl filled with water and ice. After cooling, the skin of the tomatos should peel off very easily. Be careful as the tomato could still be hot! Repeat until your last tomato is blanched.

6. Next remove the green part of the tomato where the stem grew (the pedicel), butterfly the tomato open and remove the seeds. You want tomato flesh, but not seeds.

7. Begin packing your canning jars, removing air as you pack by pressing down on the tomatoes. For added flavor add a basil leaf or two to some of your jars. I like to add an extra basil leaf, in between the glass & the tomatoes so I can see which ones I added the basil to. Stop adding tomatoes once you reach the shoulder of the jar. Remember to keep pressing all the air bubbles out as you pack the jar!

8. By now, your canning pot should be at a rolling boil. Carefully place the canning rack in the pot and you're ready for the tomato jars.

9. Place the canning lids on all your glass jars, making sure they are centered & making contact with the jar's lid, followed by the canning rings. Tighten the canning ring until it is only finger-tight.

10. Place the glass jars in the canning rack and gently lower them into the water.

11. The time in the water depends on the size of your glass jars, how many jars and the altitude of your home. My grandmother would let them soak for about 5 minutes after the bubbles from the jar stopped coming up. See the table below.

12. Bring up the glass jars & let them sit for a few minutes. Then move them using oven mits to a flat surface to sit overnight. Do not tighten the canning rings, because this may damage the seal that was created during canning!

13. The next day, test the jars, the tops should be flexed inward like a shallow bowl. Remove the ring, and flick the lid with your finger. If it does not come off, they're good to go. Note: Every so often you will get a bad ring or two, so if a lid does come off simply repeat the process above for that jar.

14. Date them and store in a cool dry place. Your properly canned tomatoes can last up to a year.

15. Homemade water canned tomatoes also make great gifts for friends, so whenever you think you have made enough - make some more.

Please Note: Normally, the processing times given for acid foods in recipes and canning guides are based on an altitude at or below 1,000 feet above sea level using the boiling-water method. At altitudes above 1,000 feet, adjust the processing time according to the chart below.
